Hunting Season – Doing What We Do Best

The week between Christmas and New Years and we are doing what we do best.  We’re out at Camp andd bursting at the seams with people.  We’ve got the Pennsylvania crew in for the holidays.  Duck hunters in and renting the back trailer.  Jenn and Tim putting in some time, Timmy in from Tampa and Kurt in tuning up his Blow Boat.  All in all, twenty four people here for the love of the hunt.  Being Petersons we’re good at what we do,  which means pretty much everything and together we proved it this week.  During a forty eight hour period, we pulled it non-stop and hit almost every sector possible for this area and the lake.  Combined we had several good duck hunts, an afternoon dove hunt, a bagged limit of specs and record  bait sales of over three hundred shiners.  There is something to do here every minute of the day and we’re doing it.

We all went duck hunting.  The birds are getting smarter and are flying later, shying  away from anything that looks dark and clumped together.  Most of our shooting was pass shooting.  Very few birds are decoying.  The Peterson men are just good shots and predictibly bag their limits.  Peterson girls,  Duck Divas, are  best at “Tude.”  Attitude with a capital A.  We will bring down a bird or two, but we can rock attitude like no other.  I wonder how we’d do if it was just us girls in a boat?  We could get a boat to the ramp but that’s about it.  If you’re hunting with the guys, you’ve got to be quick and accurate.  You don’t get a second chance.  If you miss they clean up for you.  If you have a split second of hesitation forget it, your bird is down.  Hence the Tude.   Jenn’s got it figured out.  Stay low, and don’t tell the guys when the duck is coming in. Wait until the last minute then say “Duck” and shoot.  Works great for her.  She gets the duck without having to fight for it.   “Duck, Bang”.  That’s our Jenn.  Kyle and Ryan gave up the hunt for the almighty dollar. Shiner fishing and bait sales abound.  They put in two days of hard work and were rewarded nicely for it.

Mark and I had the pleasure of a dove hunt invitation from our good friend Robert.  The birds weren’t plentiful but we had fun.  The average dove hunter will hit twenty five percent of what they are aiming at.  I did better than average.  Three shots…one cream puff, one crippled and picked up by Robert and one absolute miss.  Mark was the winner.  He happened upon a covey of quail.  Way to go Mark.

The most exciting part of the week was the maiden launch of the new fourteen foot duck hunting boat.  K and M Boatworks, Inc. an up and coming boat building company is manufacturing a new line of duck hunting boats.  They are bad ass little boats with get up and go.  Slim lines, low, easy to hide with plenty of room.  It was totally awesome to see the reaction at the boat ramp.  They’ve got a few things to tweek, but boys I think you’ve done it.  She’s going to be a winner.
